 This Year's Speakers

Dr. Kathryn Sullivan

Dr. Kathryn Sullivan serves as the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere administrator at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), an agency that aims to keep citizens, planners, emergency managers, and other decision-makers up to date with information about our changing environment. The NOAA’s tasks include daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings and climate monitoring, fisheries management, and coastal restoration. Dr. Sullivan has previously served as the President and CEO of the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio and as the United States Co-chair of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). She was also one of the first six women selected to join NASA’s astronaut corps in 1978, and can proudly say she was the first American woman to walk in space. Student Speaker: Isabel Cruz

Isabel Cruz is a junior in Davenport studying Sociology and Human Rights who has been a passionate feminist since even before she learned the term. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, she was lucky to grow up working with incredible activists through organizations like the Sadie Nash Leadership Project, Damayan Migrant Workers Association, SlutWalk NYC, and Running Start to empower other women leaders across diverse communities and develop her own leadership. Continuing her dedication to issues of gender and sexuality, Isabel has been involved with feminist activism on campus through the Women’s Center, where she began as a staffer as a freshman and now serves on board as the Head Coordinator. When she’s not in the Center, you can find her wearing her Yale Feminist t-shirt while tossing discs with Ramona Club Ultimate, dancing with A Different Drum, and picking carrots with her freshmen and fellow leaders on Harvest.

Student Speaker: Irene Jiang

Irene Jiang is a senior in Trumbull pursuing a B.S. in Cognitive Science, with a focus in Social Cognitive Neuroscience. She is passionate about people and believes in the power of personal interactions to inspire and to enact change. Growing up in central Illinois, she was encouraged to think of herself as a leader from a very young age — a concept she continued to explore in high school, when she began facilitating workshops as a part of her school’s Leadership Education And Development program. At Yale, Irene's interests are numerous and diverse. Since freshman year, she has played on the Women’s Club Water Polo team, successively serving as Business Manager, Captain, and Social Chair. Within her residential college community, she has held various roles on Trumbull College Council, including Gear Coordinator, Student Activities Chair, and Vice President. Additionally, she recruits speakers for TEDxYale, edits photos for the Yale Daily News, and dabbles in surfing, equestrian, and theater. When she can find the time, she likes to eat food with her friends and plan trips to places far away.
